God Is a Woman review

Ariana Grande's latest masterpiece - God is a Woman - has the critics and fans raving. The accompanying music video sent shockwaves through the industry with its powerful imagery. On the surface, the song is about a woman owning her sexuality, but it goes deeper than that. We live in a world where women are discriminated against because some people misinterpret the bible as saying that women brought sin into the world. God is a Woman is not blasphemy, but a reclaiming; an attempt at raising the status of women and shutting down those who claim that being a woman is a sin. It's a rallying cry to women that they can be empowered and strong, regardless of what the haters say. This is shown even more so in the music video, which contains powerful images of the art of men reimagined as women, including the painting of the "Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo (see below). There are also images of Grande literally smashing through a glass ceiling with a sledgehammer and quite literally being in the centre of the universe. It's a powerful outlook on humanity, from the viewpoint of women being the creators of life.
Musically, the track is nothing special or new and sounds like the "big sister" of Grande and Nicki Minaj's Side to Side. However, Grande's vocals steal the show, somehow improving upon perfection with No Tears Left to Cry. In terms of vocal quality, she's as spot on as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey were before her.
This is a bold career move from Grande, a former Disney star turned pop star. She's smart enough to understand that she would receive backlash and boycotts from many religious people and groups for the content matter of God is a Woman. Where Grande loses fans in that way, she gains more fans in the form of feminists and women just wanting to be heard and understood. It was a risky move but it ultimately paid off, with Grande being praised for her message and artistic vision.
