Redbone: Why everyone just can't get enough

I bet you weren't expecting to hear a song like this on your local radio this year. But "Redbone" by Childish Gambino (AKA Donald Glover) has been blowing up your radio for the past month. It's everywhere you go and everyone seems to like it, but why?
It's like nothing else on radio at the moment with its mix of psychedelic funk/soul and contemporary R&B. You'll be hard-pressed to find a person who knows what the song is about or more than 10% of it's lyrics (except for avid chart-stalkers like myself).
The song currently charts at No.14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No.8 on the Shazam chart and we can only expect the song to reach peak position in the near-distant future.
As already mentioned, the song has a unique sound with lots of contradicting dynamics which make for a brilliant listening experience. It's got a calm, laid-back "Sunday song" vibe, but there is actually a deep intensity to it and utilizes silence to effectively intrigue a listener and dramatize the song, contrary to what you might think with it's simple melody.
The lead vocals also add to the track's appeal as they are also unlike anything on radio at the moment. Unlike the clean-cut vocals of recent pop-stars, the rough tones of Donald Glover are unfamiliar to our ears but are by no-means unpleasant. In fact, in a world of auto-tuned sugar voices, the vocals in Redbone are a welcome and enjoyed difference that give the song a sense of depth that other vocalists struggle to achieve.
Finally, the album art (pictured above) is exquisite and no doubt has something to do with the track's success. It's bold and stands out among other albums with it's electric blue and stark black contrast. It somehow captures the feel of the album ("Awaken, My Love") with a definite psychedelic, yet mysterious and meaningful impression.
