Covers you need to listen to! Part 1

Hello everyone and welcome back!
Today, I'm going to be writing about some of my favourite covers of songs that are absolutely jaw-dropping. But because there are so many amazing covers that I wanted to include, I've decided to split this topic into three parts, this being Part 1. I hope you like these covers as much as I do!
Please Note: I have decided not to include songs that sample other songs (such as Wild Thoughts by DJ Khaled) because they only use a very small fraction of the other song, not enough to be considered a cover.
Also note: I have also decided not to include covers from talent shows (such as The Voice or X-Factor) or TV shows (such as Glee) because they deserve their own, separate lists. I'm also excluding Post Modern Jukebox from this list.

Stayin' Alive by Say Lou Lou (originally by The Bee Gees)

Australian sisters, Miranda and Elektra Kilbey (aka Say Lou Lou, pictured left) released their cover of the Bee Gees classic disco hit in 2016. Originally released in 1977 alongside the film Saturday Night Fever, Stayin' Alive received immediate success and launched the Bee Gees into stardom. However, Say Lou Lou decided to stay away from the track's disco roots with their cover, and instead went for a dream-pop feel. With a heavy bass line and ethereal vocals, the Say Lou Lou cover gives off a somewhat more serious vibe compared to the Bee Gees version, which helps it stand out among other covers.

Feel Good Inc. by Celia Pavey (aka Vera Blue) (originally by Gorillaz)

Celia Pavey competed on the second season of The Voice Australia but released her cover of Feel Good Inc with her debut album a year later. However, the song was originally released by alternative/indie group Gorillaz. Pavey's cover takes on a folk element which brightens the overall mood of the song and sounds very positive, which is ironic considering the meaning and lyric content of the track. This makes the cover all the more interesting and worth a listen.

Wicked Game by Grace Vardell (aka Daisy Gray) (originally by Chris Isaac)

Grace Vardell first uploaded her cover of Wicked Game to Youtube in 2015, but has since released it as a single in 2017 with Faction Entertainment. Whilst Vardell's cover doesn't stray too far from the original in terms of style and genre, Vardell opted for a stripped back version with only a piano accompanying her hauntingly beautiful vocals. Rather than changing the song completely, Vardell simplifies Chris Isaac's version, then builds on it emotionally and with vocal range, resulting in a stunning cover that will likely leave you with tears in your eyes.

Jolene - The Backyard Sessions - by Miley Cyrus (originally by Dolly Parton)

Though Miley Cyrus has done many covers of Jolene, some with Dolly Parton herself, none are quite as good as the cover she uploaded to Youtube as a part of her Backyard Sessions series. The performance features Cyrus with a small band of acoustic guitar, double bass, keyboard and three-piece drum kit. Cyrus's vocals are magnificent in this cover and each note is conveyed clearly and with contention. The underproduction of the cover allows Cyrus to deliver possibly her best performance and has a real sense authenticity to it. Whilst the cover doesn't vary too much from the original, the groove and style of it is enough to make it stand out.

That concludes Part 1 of this list. Stay tuned for Part 2!
